Suffering from PCOS and would like to know what Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can do as an Adjunct Treatment?

Jenny at East West Fertility has cared for patients suffering with PCOS for more than 30 years.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal imbalance that affects 12-18% of women of reproductive age and presently is reaching near epidemic proportions. It is associated with obesity, insulin resistance and impaired fertility. Women with PCOS can also experience irregular periods, anovulation (no ovulation) and amenorrhea (no period) which can impact upon a woman’s fertility – so it’s important that you start managing the condition as soon as possible. East West Fertility can assist patients who are suffering from some of the issues and symptoms associated with PCOS (e.g. period pain, weight gain).

Treating PCOS is important even if you’re not thinking about having a child right now – it comes with its own range of health-related problems which can manifest later on in life.

The risk of developing serious illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart problems, metabolic syndrome, or ovarian cancer is higher in those suffering from PCOS – so regulating your cycle as much as possible and managing the condition is extremely important for long term health.

Jenny has a special interest in working with PCOS patients who are seeking relief from the side effects and symptoms of the disorder. She customises a care plan for each patient based on your individual needs and guidelines provided by your treating practitioner.

Jenny at East West Fertility uses acupuncture and electro-acupuncture along with different herbs and supplements to assist patients to manage PCOS symptoms accordingly as a part of their healthcare regimen.

If you suffer from PCOS please arrange an initial consultation with Jenny at East West Fertility which consists of an initial consultation and the acupuncture treatment – this runs for approximately 60 minutes. Jenny can tailor treatments to your personal situation from there.

A promising 2017 study by Benrick et al. involving the use of electro acupuncture on 21 woman with PCOS suggests that acupuncture may have a role in lowering blood glucose levels in overweight women.

A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis by Jo & Lee on Asian women with PCOS undergoing IVF or ICSI involving 430 women concluded that acupuncture may be used as an adjunct therapy and may increase the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and ongoing pregnancy rate (OPR) and decrease the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) that PCOS sufferers are at risk of. The authors recommended further studies to be more confident and advised caution when interpreting the seemingly positive results.
